Happy weekend

"If a girl looks swell when she meets you, who gives a damn if she's late? Nobody."

Humn, I do. This shows that she does not respect others and the best thing to do is to run the other way.

Beauty to a girl is wealth/power to a guy and these can be curses if misused. For example, rich people do not truly know if people are their real friends or just after their money. In the same way, what happens when a girl's beauty fades? Well, those that do not care when she shows up late are the same ones who will drop her like a fly.

Scriptures also warn us not to give special treatment to a rich man when he comes in and the same is about one who flaunts her beauty. Anyway, I know you posted it as a funny quote but we should treat everyone with the utmost respect no matter how they look or what they have.

I don't. There are other qualities that definitely take priority over beauty, but punctuality is not one of them.

Let me go out on a limb and try to interpret this quote for the other men in the audience (correct me if I'm wrong, ladies):
Salinger is noting that women express their respect/affection for others by looking their best rather than by being punctual. So, by arriving late while looking good, they are showing that they care enough to take the time to look presentable. right?

Only if she lives in an event-based culture is that permissable. lol.

Becky, the next time Flem is in town, make a daily appt with him for the entire week/month and show up late for every single one of them, then we'll see if he really means what he says:o) Flem, you have much to learn.

I think what Salinger is really saying is if a girl looks swell when she meets you, no one gives a damn if she's late! [And if I can recall the last time we met up, you were a few min. late and I didn't give a damn!]
